Auxerre are fighting to survive in Ligue 1 on the final day of the season as they welcomed second-placed Lens to the Stade Abbe Deschamps with the away side unable to move anywhere across the table in this one.

It does mean Lens are set to finish in their highest position in Ligue 1 since finishing second back in 2001/02. After spending eight of the past 15 years in Ligue 2, this is a seriously impressive acheivement.

Even more impressively, the club have the second-best defensive record in Europe’s top five leagues this season with just 28 goals conceded being the same as Napoli’s in Serie A, but 10 goals more than Barcelona’s tally of 18.

Lens are now nine above Marseille in third spot and are guaranteed to be in the Champions League next year, although they are four behind Paris Saint-Germain in first.

As for Auxerre, they simply need to match or better the result of Nantes on the final day of the season in order to stay in Ligue 1.

Worryingly, however, Nantes play hosts to last-placed Angers and should win that game, meaning Auxerre may need to get something out of this match.
