19th and 17th will meet in a crucial Ligue 1 battle this weekend after a winless run for both Ajaccio and Strasbourg sees them inside the bottom four with just two more games left before the World Cup break.
The fact the World Cup is just over the horizon makes this game a must-win for either side if they are to head out of the relegation zone beforehand. As of now, Strasbourg sit two points behind Auxserre in 16th, and with them heading to Troyes on Friday, there could be a chance for the club to jump forward in the table. Ajaccio are four points adrift of 16th, and with a -12 goals difference, they need to win here and hope to rack up a few goals too.
This comes off the back of the club scoring a dismal eight goals so far in the league, which is one of the lowest amounts across Europe’s top five divisions. In fact, with Strasbourg winning just one game compared to Ajaccio’s two, even this means very little because of their goals scored record against one another.
Olivier Pantaloni’s men lost to Auxerre by an early goal in a 1-0 loss lat weekend, and coupled with their 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and a 1-1 draw with Troyes, the club have now gone three games without a win since that famous win at the Stade Velodrome over Marseille. Cedric Avinel was also sent off against Auxerre and misses this game and won’t return until after the World Cup.
