Sevilla vs Valencia match preview

These two teams finished 12th and 16th respectively last season, but one certainly comes into the new campaign with more optimism than the other.

Domestically, last season was a disaster for Sevilla, who sacked both Julen Lopetegui and then Jorge Sampaoli, enduring their lowest finish since most-recently being promoted from the Segunda in 2001.

But, Sevilla did what Sevilla do and that’s win the UEFA Europa League, defeating Roma on penalties at Puskás Aréna in May, following a rather attritional 1-1 draw in Budapest.

This victory earned José Luis Mendilibar the job on a full time basis, and means los Nervionenses have a fourth successive season of Champions League group stage football to look forward to.

So, will los Hispalenses kick off the new campaign with a Friday night victory at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán?

As for Valencia, they endured their lowest finish since 1986, ending up a mere two points clear of the relegation zone, and there are fears that their 37-year stay in the Primera División could be coming to an end.

Pepelu and Cenk Özkacar have both arrived for €5 million each, but the ownership of Peter Lim continues to be crippling, and Valencia are only trending in one direction.

A home win seems likely here thereby kicking off, what’s likely to be, a miserable campaign for los Che.
