Las Palmas are back in La Liga, so will they kick off with a win in the Canary Islands?
La Unión Deportiva were most-recently in the top-flight in 2018, ignominiously relegated with a measly tally of 22 points to their name.
Now, after five season in the Segunda División, they’re back, gaining promotion on the final day of last season, ending up above Levante on goal difference, whilst also just one point clear of both Alavés and Eibar.
Head Coach García Pimienta took over last summer, his first-ever senior Head Coach role, having previously spent 15 years at La Masia, most-notably working as Barça B manager.
Sandro Ramírez, Munir El Haddadi and Daley Sinkgraven have all arrived this summer, adding a bit more top-level expirence.
Nevertheless, it’s hard to know what to expect from Las Palmas, who could take La Liga by storm, or seriously struggle and sink straight back down.
Their visitors on the opening day are the division’s other island team, with RCD Mallorca making the long 1,314 mile journey, which takes over three hours, from the Balearic Islands.
Los Bermellones were one of the surprise packages last season, finishing all the way up in ninth, having only just survived on the final day 12 months earlier.
Javier Aguirre will be hoping for more of the same this season although, given that Mallorca only won four away games last season, they’re unlikely to kick off with three points at Estadio Gran Canaria.
