Deportivo Alavés vs Sevilla match preview

Given that they won the Europa League but finished 12th, it’s hard to know what to expect from Sevilla this season.

Well, there were certainly concerning signs for los Nervionenses on the opening Friday night of the season, beaten 2-1 by Valencia at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Loïc Badé was sent off towards the end of that one, with los Che then snatching the win two minutes from time.

But then, José Luis Mendilibar’s men were vastly improved in Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, deservedly taking the lead in the first half through Youssef En-Nesyri.

However, Manchester City equalised on the hour mark, forcing a penalty shootout in Piraeus and, after the first nine spot-kicks were all scored, Nemanja Gudelj’s effort thwacked the crossbar.

So, since winning their debut Super Cup appearance in 2006, Sevilla have been runners-up a staggering six times on the spin.

Deportivo Alavés meantime are back in the top-flight this season, having beaten Levante in a very dramatic play-off final back in June.

Luis García Plaza’s team though are also yet to get off the mark, following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cádiz at Estadio Ramón de Carranza last Monday night.

So, can Alavés make home advantage count at Mendizorrotza?
