Celta Vigo vs Osasuna match preview

This is the start of, what could be, a season-defining month for Osasuna, so will they kick off with three points in Galicia?

Last season, los Rojillos finished seventh in La Liga, securing that position with a final day victory over Girona, thereby qualifying for Europe for the first time in 17 years.

However, UEFA initially banned Osasuna from competing on the continent due to a match-fixing scandal that took place a decade.

Osasuna took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who overturned the decision, and cleared the club to compete.

So, later this month, los Gorritxoak will face Club Brugge in the Europa Conference League play-off round, assuming the Belgian side overcome Knattspyrnufélag Akureyrar first, which is very likely.

This would see Jagoba Arrasate’s team take on a side who, six months ago, were featuring in the Champions League knockout stages, as Osasuna seek to get into a UEFA group phase for the first time since 2006.

Celta de Vigo meantime only survived on the final day of last season, securing their Primera División status courtesy of a victory over Barcelona.

Despite this, the O Celtiña hierarchy decided to sack Carlos Carvalhal during the summer, with Rafa Benítez the new man in charge.

He won two league titles and the UEFA Cup during a very successful spell at Valencia, this 20 years ago now, but was last seen in La Liga in charge of Real Madrid in 2015/16, only lasting 25 games in the capital.

Celta have been pretty much treading water in recent seasons, so are hoping the arrival of Benítez will lead the a more comfortable campaign.

This clash at Balaídos is tough to call.
