One words sums up Atlético Madrid’s Champions League campaign this season: disastrous!

On Tuesday evening, Atleti put in a lifeless display at Estádio do Dragão, easily beaten 2-1 by Porto.

The scoreline flatters los Colchoneros, with their goal back coming right at the death.

So, having failed to win any of their last five Champions League games, Atlético actually ended up bottom of Group B.

This is the club’s 17th appearances in a UEFA group phase, and the first time they’ve ever finish fourth.

Back in La Liga, Diego Simeone’s side start the weekend third, nine points below leaders Real Madrid.

Atleti were unbeaten in five league games, prior to last Saturday’s shambolic defeat against Cádiz.

The Yellow Submarine led 2-0, only for a quick-fire João Félix brace to, seemingly, salvage a draw.

However, in the 99th minute, some more charitable defending allowed Cádiz to take all three points.

That’s already Atlético’s fourth league defeat of the season, so will they suffer another here?

Given Espanyol’s form, they’ll be welcome visitors.

Blanquiazules held Mallorca to a 1-1 draw at Son Moix last weekend, thanks to José Carlos Lazo’s equaliser.

However, Diego Martinez’s team have still only won twice since his appointment, beating Athletic in early- September and Valladolid last month.

So, despite Atleti’s own issues, Cívitas Metropolitano will witness a home win, right?
