A Monday night Basque derby in La Liga, between two clubs in contention for European qualification.

Athletic Club start the weekend fifth, just two points below Atlético Madrid, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

However, Ernesto Valverde’s men have won just two of their last eight league matches, most-recently held to a goalless draw by Real Betis.

At home though, Athletic have won five of their last seven, only defeated by Espanyol and Atleti this season.

So, a tough assignment for Osasuna, who are just two points below their hosts, as they make the relatively short 102 mile journey north.

Los Rojillos returned to league action on New Year’s Eve, but were beaten 2-0 by the other Basque giants Real Sociedad at Anoeta.

That’s now back-to-back defeats for Jagoba Arrasate’s team, who’d taken ten points from four outings beforehand.

Athletic Club demolished Eldense 6-1, with Nico Williams, Álex Berenguer, Oier Zarraga and Iker Muniain all on target.

Meanwhile, Osasuna needed extra time to see off Gimnàstic de Tarragona, with an 112th minute own goal eventually proving to be the difference.
