Vincent Kompany in ‘stable’ condition after training ground collapse – but recovery could take ‘weeks’

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is in a “stable” condition after collapsing at the team’s training ground, but recovery could take “weeks”, according to the club’s director of sport Max Eberl.

Kompany was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing at the club’s training ground. Initial reports indicated the 40-year-old was in a stable condition, but Eberl has now confirmed he has spoken with the Belgian.

“He will spend a few more days in hospital until everything is checked over,” Eberl said in a press conference on Saturday.

“It shows again how health is the most important thing in life – not football.”

Eberl said that the incident happened while Kompany, who has been dealing with a viral infection in recent days, was overseeing an U23’s training session.

The Bayern board member revealed that initial tests had “yielded some results”, but he insisted “further results are needed to determine exactly what it is”.

Eberl added: “Vinnie will get all the time. We’re not going to start setting any timeframes. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it’s a question of what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking in terms of days, but weeks.

“He’ll only come back when he’s fit.

“He’s in the best hands. The best thing we can do is support him emotionally with energy and love.”

Kompany had been in the dugout for Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig last weekend but did not take part in any media commitments.

Kompany was also present for Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday despite his illness.

Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga on goal difference from Borussia Dortmund, visit third-placed Freiburg on Sunday.
