Harry Kane wants to know Ballon d’Or result early as Bayern Munich star closes in on historic award

Harry Kane has admitted he would prefer to know whether he has won the Ballon d’Or before Monday’s ceremony, with the Bayern Munich striker among the leading contenders for football’s biggest individual prize.

The England captain is the bookmakers’ favourite to claim the award following another remarkable year in Germany, although Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal is also in contention.

Kane, 33, could become the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

However, he insists he has received no indication of the result and will have to wait until the ceremony to discover whether he has won.

Speaking after Bayern’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal on Wednesday, Kane opened up on the award.

“They want everyone to go, all the big names there and there will be more people watching it if they don’t know, so I can understand why,” he said.

“From my point of view, of course, I’d love to know to just kind of see and not have to wait throughout the whole night.

“But it is their decision, I can’t control that. We’ll have to just enjoy it and try not to stress out too much.

“I try not to think about it. Obviously it is hard not to,” he added.

“There are always rum ours flying around and you try to stay away from it.

“Of course I am going to try and enjoy Monday night as much as possible. It is a big occasion so we will have to wait and see.”

Kane closes in on Champions League record

Kane strengthened his Ballon d’Or credentials by scoring against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena, extending his remarkable Champions League scoring streak.

The striker has now found the net in 10 consecutive matches in the competition, leaving him just one game short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 11.

However, Bayern were unable to secure all three points against the Gunners, with the 2-2 draw leaving them 14th in the Champions League league phase after three matches.

Vincent Kompany’s side have collected five points from their opening three European fixtures, recording one win and two draws.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Freiburg, where Bayern will look to maintain their position at the top of the table.
