United States vs Uzbekistan match preview

The first match of Gregg Berhalter’s second stint in charge, with this the start of the most-important three-year cycle in USMNT history.

Over the summer, led by B. J. Callaghan, the U.S. retained their CONCACAF Nations League title, hammering Mexico tres a cero in the semis, before a 2-0 victory over Canada in the final at Allegiant Stadium.

Then, with a primarily domestic-based roster, USA could not go all the way at the Gold Cup, ousted in the semi-finals by Panama on penalties at Snapdragon Stadium.

Now, the Stars and Stripes’ next four fixtures are friendlies, welcoming Oman to Minnesota on Tuesday, before games against Germany and Ghana to come next month.

The United States are looking towards November’s Copa América play-off, set to face a team from Nations League A over two legs for a place at next summer’s Copa, which the U.S. will host of course.

So, with a Copa América and a World Cup to come on home soil in the next 33 months, USA must make every game count, and that includes friendlies against not particularly glamorous opponents.

The White Wolves have never qualified for a World Cup, but have featured at all seven Asia Cups since gaining independence, their best run coming in 2011, getting all the way to the semi-finals.

Following World Cup expansion, Srečko Katanec’s team will fancy their chances of returning to the States for the 2026 edition, commencing their qualification campaign against Turkmenistan in November.

Before then, Uzbekistan will get to test themselves against CONCACAF’s big two, also scheduled to face Mexico at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday.

Here, at CityPark in St. Louis, the USMNT faithful will expect to see a comfortable home win.
