Will Brazil’s unbeaten streak continue ahead of the World Cup?

On Friday night, they easily beat Ghana 3-0 in Le Havre; Marquinhos breaking the deadlock, before Richarlison bagged a brace.

This means A Seleção have still only lost once since exiting in Russia, and are unbeaten in 14 matches, winning the last six.

As they move down to Paris, another victory is fully expected for Tite’s team.

Tunisia meantime will also feature in Qatar in November, after they beat Mali in the African play-offs in March.

The Eagles of Carthage beat Comoros in a friendly on Thursday; Taha Yassine Khenissi the only scorer.

Having also defeated Japan and Chile in summer friendlies, Jalel Kadri’s team cannot be underestimated.

Here though, Brazil should put on a show at Parc des Princes.

Hope and expectations in Argentina continue to grow by the day, with fans believing their 36-year wait for World Cup glory is about to end.

On Friday night, Lautaro Martínez broke the deadlock, before Lionel Messi bagged a brace against Honduras in Miami.

This extends la Albiceleste’s unbeaten streak to 34 matches, winning the Copa América and Finalissima in this period.

Lionel Scaloni’s side are fully expected to continue that unbeaten streak in New Jersey.

Jamaica meanwhile still haven’t qualified for a World Cup since France ‘98, finished sixth in CONCACAF qualification.

The Reggae Boyz did hold Qatar to a 1-1 draw in Austria in their last friendly; Jourdaine Fletcher the scorer.

Under new boss Heimir Hallgrímsson, Jamaica have already qualified for next summer’s Gold Cup, via the Nations League and, longer team, are dreaming of being at World Cup 2026.

Here, it won’t be straight-forward for Argentina, but they should have too much quality at Red Bull Arena.

Saudi Arabia vs United States

September 27, 2022

7:00 pm GMT+1

After a dreadful and alarming performance on Friday, the United States need to improve in their final pre-World Cup friendly.

In Düsseldorf, the U.S. were outplayed, outfought and outthought in a 2-0 friendly defeat to Japan last time out.

The Stars and Stripes will make their World Cup return this November, having failed to qualify for Russia.

But, there is already pressure on Gregg Berhalter after his team’s dismal display four days ago.

If the reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup and Nations League winners are to make an impact in Qatar, they’re going to have to show better than that.

Can USA alleviate some of those fears in Murcia?

Saudi Arabia actually finished one point above Japan in Asian qualifying, beating them in Jeddah before a defeat in Saitama.

This helped the Green Falcons qualify for a sixth World Cup, although they haven’t got out of the group since their debut at USA ‘94.

Hervé Renard’s team lost both friendlies in June, against Colombia and Venezuela, before a goalless draw against Ecuador on Friday.

Saudi Arabia will play six out-of-window friendlies after this, so to say they’re leaving no stone unturned is an understatement.

Here, will USA have too much quality at Estadio Nueva Condomina?

Can Canada continue the positivity ahead of their World Cup return?

On Friday night, the Canucks beat Qatar 2-0 in Vienna, with Cyle Larin and Jonathan David both on target.

John Herdman’s team finished top of CONCACAF qualifying, so the Reds will appear at their second World Cup, 36 years after their first.

While most expect Canada to bow out in the group stages, up against Croatia, Belgium and Morocco, they cannot be underestimated.

Here, they’ll face a stern test against another side for whom preparation is key.

Uruguay looked set to miss out on Qatar so, with for qualifiers to go, controversially sacked Óscar Tabárez after 15 years in charge.

This paid off because, under Diego Alonso, they then won those final four games and snuck into the top four.

Since, la Celeste have been inconsistent in friendlies, beating Mexico and Panama whilst also drawing with the U.S. in June, before going down 1-0 Iran in Sankt Pölten in Friday.

Given that Uruguay are in a group with Portugal, Korea Republic and Ghana, they’ll need to be at the top of their game.

Korea Republic vs Cameroon

September 27, 2022

12:00 pm GMT+1

With these two heading to Qatar in November, both will want to perform in this friendly in Seoul.

Korea Republic’s form since qualifying has been mixed, notably getting hammered 5-1 by Brazil back in June.

On Friday, the Taegeuk Warriors drew 2-2 with Costa Rica in Goyang; Hwang Hee-chan and Son Heung-min the scorers.

So, in their final game in front of a home crowd, Paulo Bento’s team would love to claim a victory this time.

Cameroon meantime suffered a surprising and worrying 2-0 defeat to relative minnows Uzbekistan on Friday.

Les Lions Indomptables are back at the World Cup having ousted Algeria in the play-offs on away goals; Karl Toko Ekambi striking in the 124th minute.

However, the way Rigobert Song’s side are going, they’re going to have little impact on a group containing Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland.

Thus, a victory for the hosts seems likely at Sangam Stadium.

Can Iran claim another scalp as excitement builds ahead of the World Cup?

On Friday, Mehdi Taremi’s late winner saw them beat Uruguay 1-0 in Sankt Pölten.

Carlos Queiroz, who led IR Iran in both Brazil and Russia, is now back as Head Coach, with that win the first game of his second spell.

Most expect the Asian side to finish rock bottom of a group featuring England, the U.S. and Wales, but they may prove to be a tougher test than it first appears.

Senegal meantime beat Bolivia 2-0 in France on Friday; Boulaye Dia and Sadio Mané the scorers.

The Lions of Teranga are reigning Africa Cup of Nations Champions, so will travel to Qatar with high hopes.

Aliou Cissé's team were knocked out the 2018 edition on disciplinary record, something they’ll seek to avenge later this year.

12:55 pm GMT+1

Will Japan continue to impress?

On Friday, goals from Daichi Kamada and Kaoru Mitoma saw the Samurai Blue beat the United States 2-0 in Düsseldorf.

To say Hajime Moriyasu’s team completely dominated that game throughout would actually be an understatement.

The problem for Japan is that they’re in a group with Germany and Spain, so progression to the knockout rounds isn’t going to be easy to say the least.

But, the way the four-times Asian champions are playing just now, suggests an upset could be on the cards.

Here, Ecuador, who’ve qualified for Qatar somewhat unexpectedly, will prove a tough assignment.

La Tricolor actually finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying, above Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Colombia.

Since, Gustavo Alfaro’s team have beaten Nigeria and Cape Verde in friendlies, both 1-0, and have played out a pair of goalless draws, against Mexico and Saudi Arabia, the latter on Friday.

Thus, to say Ecuador are a low-scoring team would be a bit of an understatement.

September 28, 2022

3:00 am GMT+1

Will Mexico make it two wins out of two in this international window?

On Saturday night, Hirving Lozano’s late winner saw el Tri beat Peru 1-0 in Pasadena.

In the summer, Tata Martino’s men only won two of five matches, beating Nigeria in a friendly and Suriname in the CONCACAF Nations League.

So, to say Mexico aren’t heading to Qatar firing on all cylinders is a bit of an understatement.

Thus, it’s vitally important that they make it back-to-back friendly victories in Santa Clara.

At least Mexico aren’t in Colombia’s position, after they missed out on the World Cup, winning only five of 18 qualifiers.

Los Cafeteros did hammered Guatemala at the weekend; James Rodríguez, Luis Sinisterra, Rafael Santos Borré and Yáser Asprilla all scoring.

So, this’ll be a good test for Mexico, but will they prevail at Levi’s Stadium?

Qatar vs Chile

September 27, 2022

6:00 pm GMT+1

Can Qatar get back on track after a disappointing defeat on Friday?

In their last outing, the Maroons were outclassed by Canada, going down 2-0 in Vienna; worrying signs.

Félix Sánchez Bas’ side have spent all summer playing friendly matches, mostly against European club sides.

However, in 2022, they’ve won just five of 15 outings, which doesn’t bode well ahead of the big kick off on 20 November.

So, will Qatar put in a better display this time?

Chile meanwhile have now failed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups, despite lifting successive Copa Américas beforehand.

La Roja have actually now lost six successive matches, following Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Morocco in Barcelona.

Thus, Qatar will fancy their chances of victory at Franz Horr Stadium.

Will Morocco continue their excellent form?

On Friday, goals from Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Sabiri saw the Atlas Lions beat Chile 2-0 in Barcelona.

This was the perfect start to life under Walid Regragui; he’s taken over after unpopular manager Vahid Halilhodžić was dismissed.

Overall, Morocco have won 16 of their last 20 internationals, only losing to Egypt and USA since October 2019.

So, they’ll be confident of another victory here.

Paraguay meanwhile have now failed to qualify for three successive World Cups, despite appearing at four consecutive editions beforehand.

On Friday, los Guaraníes beat the United Arab Emirates, thanks to Fabián Balbuena’s late winner in Austria.

So, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team will be no pushovers, but Morocco should prevail at Estadio Benito Villamarín.

Will Costa Rica continue to build momentum?

On Friday, Jewison Bennette’s brace helped los Ticos hold Korea Republic to a 2-2 draw at Goyang Stadium.

Costa Rica snapped up the final World Cup spot back in June, beating New Zealand 1-0 in the inter-confederation play-offs.

Their reward is a place in Group E, alongside Spain, Germany and Japan.

Whilst it’s going to take a miracle for Luis Fernando Suárez’s team to reach the knockout rounds, they have only lost one of their last 11.

Uzbekistan meanwhile have never qualified for the World Cup, but showed they’re capable of springing a surprise on Friday.

Goals from Khojimat Erkinov and Oston Urunov saw the White Wolves beat Cameroon 2-0; a massive surprise.

Srečko Katanec’s side have now won all seven matches in 2022, booking their place at next summer’s Asia Cup in this period.

Two African heavyweights, neither of whom will be in Qatar in November, meet in this friendly in Oran.

Back in March, both were beaten in the African play-offs on away goals; Nigeria dumped out by Ghana, while Algeria were heartbreakingly ousted by Cameroon.

So, for both, focus is on AFCON qualifying and then, ultimately, glory in Côte d’Ivoire in January 2024.

Nigeria began qualification with back-to-back wins in June, beating Sierra Leone 2-1 and then São Tomé and Príncipe 10-0.

The latter, unsurprisingly, is the Super Eagles’ biggest victory of all time, smashing the previous record that stood at 6-1.

Algeria too won both qualifiers in the summer, both 2-0, against Uganda and Tanzania.

The Dessert Foxes were also in friendly action on Friday, beating Guinea 1-0 thanks to Islam Slimani’s winner.

So, expect to see two mix-and-match XIs at Oran Olympic Stadium, but who will prevail?

Will Ghana claim a morale-boosting victory in this friendly?

Back in March, completely against the odds, the Black Stars qualified for the World Cup, ousting local rivals Nigeria on away goals.

Since then though, they’ve only won one of six matches, beating Madagascar in an AFCON qualifier during the summer.

On Friday night, Otto Addo’s team were easily beaten 3-0 by Brazil in Le Havre.

The good news from that game was that Tariq Lamptey, Mohammed Salisu and Iñaki Williams all made their international debuts.

Against a lot less high-profile opponents, Ghana will fancy their chances of victory here.

Nicaragua meanwhile have never qualified for the World Cup, but have appeared at two of the last three Gold Cups.

Having missed the most recent edition of that competition, pipped by Suriname and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, they’re desperate to put that right.

La Azul y Blanco were excellent during June’s four CONCACAF Nations League B games, accumulating ten points.

If they remain top of that group, they’ll qualify for the Gold Cup; Trinidad and Tobago are just one point behind.

In this friendly at Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco, Ghana should be far too strong.

Côte d’Ivoire vs Guinea

September 27, 2022

7:00 pm GMT+1

With the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for 2024, to be hosted by Ivory Coast, every second of preparation counts.

Côte d’Ivoire didn’t even make it to the final round of World Cup qualifying, ousted by Cameroon in the group phase.

So, les Éléphants have now missed out on back-to-back World Cups, despite qualifying for three-in-a-row beforehand.

However, under new boss Jean-Louis Gasset, as mentioned, full focus is on winning AFCON on home soil in January 2024.

Ivory Coast beat Togo 2-1 in a friendly over the weekend; Seko Fofana and Franck Kessié the scorers.

Will they win again, this time in Amiens?

Guinea meantime lost 1-0 to Algeria in a Friday night friendly fixture in Oran.

The National Elephants’ focus is on qualifying for the next AFCON, needing to finish above Malawi and Ethiopia to achieve this.

Before then, who will prevail at Stade de la Licorne?

On Friday, Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, Mostafa Mohamed also on target, as the Pharaohs easily beat Niger 3-0 in Alexandria.

It’s been a heartbreaking year for Egypt, beaten in the AFCON Final and World Cup play-offs, both times by Senegal on penalties.

Here, will new boss Rui Vitória make it two wins out of two here?

Liberia meanwhile haven’t qualified for any major tournament since 2002, when now President of the country George Weah led the line at that AFCON.

Next year, the Leone Stars will face South Africa in a pair of qualifiers that’ll determine whether or not they’ll be ending that exile.

Israel can celebrate their biggest and best achievement since gaining UEFA membership in 1991.

On Saturday night, the Blue and Whites secured promotion to Nations League A, dramatically beating Albania 2-1 in Tel Aviv.

Shon Weissman breaking the deadlock, but they still needed a 91st minute winner from Tai Baribo to secure top spot.

So, having accumulated eight points from four League B games, Israel will compete in the top-tier in 2024.

They have simultaneously guaranteed a Euro 2024 play-off place, as they bid to qualify for a maiden major tournament since joining Europe.

So, in their final game of a very successful 2022, will Alon Hazan’s team claim a friendly victory?

Malta meantime missed out on promotion to League C, beaten 2-1 in a straight shootout for top spot in Estonia on Saturday.

The Falcons did beat San Marino home and away in the Nations League, having also hammered Cyprus 3-0 during World Cup qualifying.

So, Devis Mangia’s team are an improving outfit, but Israel are likely to be too strong at Grawnd Nazzjonali.

Will Peru be too strong in this friendly in Washington DC?

Back in June, la Blanquirroja heartbreakingly missed out on World Cup qualification, beaten on penalties by Australia in the inter-confederation play-offs.

Four years earlier, Peru’s 36-year World Cup exile came to an end, reaching a first Copa América Final since 1975 the following summer.

The manager who led them to this unprecedented success, Ricardo Gareca, resigned July; a big blow.

On Saturday, the Juan Reynoso era began with a 1-0 defeat to Mexico at the Rose Bowl in California.

So, even if this is only a friendly, he’ll be determined to claim his first victory in charge.

El Salvador meanwhile haven’t appeared at a World Cup since 1982, winning just two of 14 matches in the Octagonal round of CONCACAF qualifying.

La Selecta do currently sit top of their Nations League group, so have qualified for next year’s Gold Cup, but face a tough away game against the United States in March.

Since then, Thomas Christiansen’s team have been pretty solid in the Nations League, beating Costa Rica and Martinique at home, before a disappointing goalless draw in Fort-de-France.

Nevertheless, they have qualified for next summer’s Gold Cup, and will be hoping to have an impact at that tournament.

While that is going on, Bahrain will be competing at the Asia Cup.

The Reds beat Bangladesh, Malaysia and Turkmenistan in qualifiers in June, so have now qualified for every edition since 2000.

However, having been beaten in a friendly by Cape Verde on Friday, Hélio Sousa’s team will be hoping for better here.

4:00 pm GMT+1

Will the United Arab Emirates claim a rare victory over non-Asian opposition?

On Friday, the UAE were beaten 1-0 by Paraguay in Austria, the only goal coming five minutes from time.

So, the Sons of Zayed haven’t beaten a team from outside AFC since a win over Dominican Republic in 2019, a fact they’ll be hoping to change here.

More importantly, Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s team failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, beaten in the Asian play-offs by Australia in June.

Thus, a victory here for the United Arab Emirates would be most welcome as they bid to life morale.

Venezuela meantime are the only CONMEBOL member who’ve never qualified for a World Cup, winning just ten of their last 54 qualifiers.

La Vinotinto did beat Malta and Saudi Arabia in friendlies in June, but were narrowly defeated by Iceland on Thursday.

Honduras qualified for both South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, only missing out on Russia by virtue of a play-off defeat to Australia.

However, this time round, la H failed to win any of their 14 World Cup qualifiers, accumulating just four points.

Since, Diego Vásquez’s side have beaten both Canada and Curaçao in the Nations League, so have, almost, qualifed for next summer’s Gold Cup.

On Friday night, Honduras were hammered 3-0 by Argentina in Miami, but this should be a more realistic chance of victory.

Guatemala meanwhile featured in last summer’s Gold Cup, returning to the competition after six years away.

On Saturday, Luis Fernando Tena’s team were demolished 4-1 by Colombia in New Jersey; Oscar Santis’ goal very much of the consolation variety.

Marc Klok, Fachruddin Aryanto and Dimas Drajad on target for the hosts, while Rangelo Janga and Juninho Bacuna netted in vain.

Indonesia have qualified for next summer’s Asia Cup by beating Kuwait and Nepal back in June.

This will be the Red and Whites’ first appearance at the tournament since 2007 when they were co-hosts.

Curaçao meantime missed out on Gold Cup 2021 after an untimely Covid-19 outbreak on the eve of the tournament.
