Notts County vs Chesterfield match preview

These two teams finished second and third in the National League, but ended up a whopping 23 points apart.

So, who will be celebrating a return to the Football League, and who will remain rooted in non-league?

With only the champions gaining automatic promotion, Notts County’s staggering tally of 107 points was not enough to see them go up.

The Magpies won 32 of 46 fixtures, losing only three, but were pipped to the title by Wrexham, largely due to a 3-2 defeat they suffered at the Racecourse Ground on Easter Monday.

So, Luke Williams’ side had to settle for a spot in the play-offs, welcoming Boreham Wood to Meadow Lane last Sunday.

It looked like a whole year’s work was going to be for nothing, when the Wood raced into a 2-0 first half lead in Nottingham.

Then, as most were preparing for penalties, Jodi Jones’ long-range strike in the 120th minute sent the County fans crazy, snatching a 3-2 victory.

Prior to relegation in 2019, Notts County had been an EFL club for their entire 157-year history.

Since, the Magpies have been beaten in these play-offs by Harrogate, Torquay and Grimsby, so are desperately hoping this’ll be fourth time lucky.

Chesterfield meantime fell out of the Football League in 2018, subsequently beaten in last season’s play-offs by Solihull Moors, having been ousted by Notts County themselves 12 months earlier.

This season, like their opponents, the Spireites also won their semi-final 3-2 after extra time, ousting Bromley last weekend.

Liam Mandeville with the winner on the cusp of half time in extra time.

During the regular league season, these two played out a 2-2 draw way back in August, before Notts County won 2-1 at the Technique Stadium in February.

This time, at Wembley no less, who will be celebrating promotion into League Two?
