Norway vs Switzerland match preview

Given that France and Italy complete the Group D line-up, these two will both be desperate to make a winning start in Cluj-Napoca.

Norway are making only their third appearance at an under-21 Euros, amazingly reaching the semi-finals at both of the previous two, these coming in 1998 and 2013.

To get here, the Lions topped their qualifying group, above Croatia, thanks largely to an astonishing 3-2 victory over the Croats in Drammen, in which they scored twice in stoppage time.

Nevertheless, Leif Gunnar Smerud’s side travel to Romania as rank-outsiders, hoping to make a winning start here.

Switzerland meantime are appearing at these finals for the fifth time, getting all the way to the 2011 final, beaten by Spain in Århus, more-recently bowing out in the group stages two summers ago.

Rossocrociati qualified for this edition as the best-ranked group runners up, their most noteworthy result being a 2-2 draw with fellow-qualifiers Netherlands in Lausanne.

Neither of these two are expected to make it beyond the group phase, so will either pick up three points on opening night at Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu in Transylvania?

Norway team news

Leeds’ Kristoffer Klaesson is likely to be Norway’s number one goalkeeper, while his club teammate Leo Hjelde is set to start in defence, with Manchester City teenager Oscar Bobb in attack.

Midfielder Håkon Evjen will be in midfield; he’s the only squad member to have been capped at senior level.

Switzerland team news

Dan Ndoye scored the winner as Switzerland beat England 1-0 on matchday one of the group phase two years ago and could be a key figure once again.

Their star though is Zeki Amdouni, who’s already scored five times in five appearances at senior level, including the winner in Andorra on Friday and then a brace against Romania on Monday, both in European Qualifiers.
