Montenegro vs Bulgaria match preview

With Hungary and Serbia running away with it at the top of Group G, both simply need a victory in Podgorica to keep alive their qualification hopes.

Montenegro were held to a 2-2 draw by Lithuania on Thursday, with all the goals at Darius and GirÄ—nas Stadium reserved for the final 20 minutes.

Despite going a goal down, the Brave Falcons fought back to lead 2-1; Nikola Krstović equalising before Stefan Savić bundled home a go-ahead goal in the 89th minute.

Nevertheless, there was still time for one last twist in Kaunas, as Lithuania pinched a point at the death.

For Montenegro, this takes their points tally up to five, two points adrift neighbours Serbia, and their hopes of a first-ever major tournament appearance are fading fast.

The only victory Miodrag Radulović’s team have enjoyed so far came in Razgrad on matchday one, when Krstović was the night’s only scorer.

The Lions’ most-recent tournament appearance came in 2004 and, given that they’ve won only three of their last 24 qualifiers, Mladen Krstajić’s team aren’t going to change that any time soon.

On Thursday, Bulgaria were beaten 1-0 by IR Iran at Stadion Hristo Botev in Plovdiv so, including friendlies, are now without a win in six.

This streak is likely to be extended at Stadion pod Goricom, given that Montenegro are firm favourites to pick up the points.

Montenegro team news

Stevan Jovetić is, by some distance, Montenegro’s record goal-scorer, although the most-recent of his 31 strikes came in March 2021.

As a result, he was on the bench in mid-week, coming on at half time, with Stefan Mugoša and Nikola Krstović getting the nod.

Bulgaria team news

Mladen Krstajić named a pretty strong side for Thursday’s friendly against Iran, making it all the more disappointing that his team were beaten.

In goal, Dimitar Mitov made his senior international debut in that one, so could continue between the sticks, having impressed for St Johnstone this season.

Ilia Gruev, who’s recently joined Leeds, will be in midfield, with captain Kiril Despodov leading the line.
