Paraguay vs Peru match preview

The latest edition of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying gets underway in Ciudad del Este, so who will get three points on the board on opening night?

Hosts Paraguay have previously qualified for eight World Cups, although the most-recent of those came in 2010.

Los Guaraníes were frankly wretched during the most-recent qualification cycle, winning just three of 18 fixtures, thereby finishing eighth.

However, there is hope; World Cup expansion means the top six now qualify automatically, with seventh enough to earn a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs.

If Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team are going to finish in the top seven, Paraguay’s home form will be key, starting here of course.

Peru meantime ended their 36-year World Cup exile at Russia 2018, but did not feature in Qatar, following a penalty shootout defeat to Australia in the inter-confederation play-offs.

In more good news, Peru’s recent record against Paraguay is fantastic, unbeaten in ten encounters, actually winning nine of those, most-recently prevailing 1-0 in a friendly in Lima ten months ago.

So, could an away win be on the cards at Estadio Antonio Aranda?
