One of Europe’s most historic and well-supported clubs continue this latest adventure.

In their rich and proud history, Galatasaray have won a record 22 Super Lig titles as well as 18 Turkish Cups and 16 Turkish Super Cups.

Their greatest moments in European competition came in 2000, beating Arsenal in the UEFA Cup Final before adding the UEFA Super Cup with a win over Real Madrid.

But, in recent seasons, their star has fallen both domestically and abroad.

In 2019/20, they finished sixth, bouncing back, sort of, last season by finishing second, behind rivals Besiktas on goal difference.

In Europe, the Yellow-Reds have qualified for 19 UEFA group stages but failed in that regard last season.

Despite wins over Neftchi Baku and then Hajduk Split, they crashed out in the Europa League play-off round, losing 1-0 on aggregate to Rangers.

This season’s European adventure got off to an even worse start, entering in the Champions League Second Qualifying Round.

However, they weren’t in that top-tier competition long, losing 5-1 in the first leg to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

They were then beaten 2-1 at home in the second leg eight days ago but that merely concluded their biggest two-legged European defeat since 1976.

So, the pressure is on Fatih Terim’s side to salvage this European campaign and get into the Europa League.

The winners of this tie will advance to the Europa League play-off round and face Danish Cup Winners Randers.

It’s not over for the losers as they drop into the Europa Conference League play-off round and take on Vojvodina or LASK.

Will Galatasaray build up a substantial first leg lead at their temporary home of Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium?

Will St Johnstone leave Istanbul with a result?

As for St Johnstone, without a shadow of a doubt, this is the biggest game in their far more modest European history.

This time last year, the Saints had won just one trophy in their 136 year history, the Scottish Cup in 2014.

Since though, they’ve won two more.

Back in February, St Johnstone won the League Cup for the very first time, beating Livingston 1-0 at Hampden.

83 days later, deja vu, they completed the cup double, beating Hibernian 1-0 in the Scottish Cup Final.

Shaun Rooney with the only goal, coming in the 32nd minute, both times.

As a result of this success, Callum Davidson’s side start their European campaign in this third qualifying round.

This’ll be just the eighth season that Saints have competed in UEFA competition but this’ll be the sixth of those season since 2012.

Their previous best runs have been just getting to this round, losing to FC Minsk and then Spartak Trnava at this stage in 2013 and 2014.

This means they’ve lost their last three European ties, falling in the first qualifying round to Alashkert and then Riteriai in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

Thus, Galatasaray will be, for certain, the most glamours opposition to pitch up in Perth.

The second leg at McDiarmid Park will be quite the occasion but Davidson’s men need to ensure they’re still in the tie ahead of that one.

Unlike their hosts, St Johnstone were in action at the weekend as the Scottish Premiership season got underway.

However, they were held to a goalless draw in Dingwall by Ross County; Ali McCann smashing a second half penalty over the bar and, almost, over the stand.

Can St Johnstone get a result in Istanbul and keep this tie alive ahead of the second leg at home?

Gala have had over a week to prepare for this tie as the Turkish season doesn’t start until 16 August; their first fixture is against newly-promoted Giresunspor.

But, after two dismal performance against PSV, Fatih Terim will surely be at least tempted to make changes to his XI.

Despite that heavy scoreline, Galatasaray do have some familiar faces and talented players in their squad.

One of these is Fernando Muslera; since joining the club in 2011, he’s made 387 appearances, 14 major honours, scoring one goal.

The Copa America earlier this summer was also his ninth major tournament with Uruguay.

Ahead of him, Terim went with a back three away to PSV before switching to a four in the home leg.

If it is a back four, Christian Luyindama and Marcao could get the nod with Alpaslan Ozturk missing out.

Patrick van Aanholt is in line for his debut after joining from Crystal Palace but is unlikely to start.

Aytac Kara and Emre Kilinc are likely to sit in front of the defence as a double-pivot.

Ahead of them, Gala have a plethora of attacking options of varying degrees of experience and quality.

Jesse Sekidika started both legs against PSV but could be left out here for more experienced options.

Kerem Akturkoglu could get the nod on the left with Ryan Babel on the other flank.

Through the middle could be a lethal strike partnership.

Radamel Falcao, who won this competition in 2011 and 2012, could start having been on the bench for their last two games.

He’ll partner Mbaye Diagne who scored a spectacular overhead kick in last week’s home defeat.

The Senegalese international impressed at West Bromwich Albion earlier this calendar year, scoring three times in the Premier League.

Mostafa Mohamed, Baris Yilmaz, Arda Truan, Gokay Guney and Ali Yavuz Kol are other attacking options in this very bloated squad.

As for Callum Davidson’s side, they played for the first time this season on Saturday but the side is broadly similar to last season’s cup double winners.

Goalkeeper Zander Clark is one of a few played who’ve played in Europe for the club before having joined a decade ago.

In front of him will be the usual back three: Jamie McCart, Liam Gordon and captain Jason Kerr.

That trio will be seriously tested be this Galatasaray attack.

One new recruit is left-wing-back Reece Devine; the 19 year old is on loan from Manchester United.

Shaun Rooney will be on the other flank.

Having scored the winner in both cup finals last season he’s a fans’ favourites despite having not met any Saints fans yet, something he’ll rectify against Motherwell on Sunday.

Midfield Ali McCann is St Johnstone’s most talented player, will he be with the club much longer?

Further forward, Canadian international David Wotherspoon and Michael O’Halloran will be supporting a loan striker.

Callum Hendry is likely to get the nod up front but Stevie May and Chris Kane are also very much in contention.

Will St Johnstone get a famous result in Istanbul?
