Arsenal vs Liverpool: Match preview
LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – JANUARY 13: Granit Xhaka of Arsenal walks off the pitch after being awarded a red card during the Carabao Cup Semi Final First Leg match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield on January 13, 2022 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Chloe Knott – Danehouse/Getty Images)
After the first leg at Anfield seven days ago, it’s now a winner takes all clash in North London and Arsenal will certainly be very thankful for that.
Just 23 minutes into the first meeting, Andy Robertson’s diagonal ball picked out Diogo Jota who, running through on goal, was karate-kicked in the chest by Granit Xhaka.
Not only was the Swiss midfielder denying a clear goal scoring opportunity, it was violent conduct, leading to the most obvious red card in football history.
A man down for 75% of the match, Arsenal parked the bus, aiming to leave with a draw and, ultimately, both clubs fashioned one clear chance each.
Bukayo Saka came closest to breaking the deadlock, but his effort was smothered by Alisson, preventing the ultimate smash and grab.
Liverpool’s clear opening did come right at the last but Takumi Minamino, somehow, smashed his effort over the bar when faced with an open goal.
Despite being a man up for almost 70 minutes, Jürgen Klopp’s men mustered just a solitary shot on target, missing the chance to establish a hefty first leg advantage.
So, with the away goals rule not in operation, it’s winner takes all at the Emirates, with any kind of draw resulting in a penalty shootout.
Liverpool are looking to reach their first domestic cup final for six years while Arsenal are aiming to win this trophy for the first time since 1993.
Who will get through to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final on 27 February?
Arsenal team news vs Liverpool
LONDON, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 21: Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard during the Carabao Cup Quarter Final match between Arsenal and Sunderland at Emirates Stadium on December 21, 2021 in London, England. (Photo by Rob Newell – CameraSport via Getty Images)
Arsenal’s squad is extremely thin at the moment, so much so that Sunday’s North London Derby was called off at their request.
This is particularly the case at the base of midfield with Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey at AFCON and Granit Xhaka starting his suspension.
So, Albert Sambi Lokonga is likely to be partnered by Benjamin White, with Rob Holding therefore covering White’s place at centre-back.
Mikel Arteta will be hoping that Takehiro Tomiyasu is fit enough to return at right-back after Cédric hobbled off very early at Anfield.
At the other end of the pitch, Martin Ødegaard missed that game due to a positive Covid-19 test but his isolation should now be over.
So, at least one of the Norwegian or Emile Smith Rowe, who’s been injured of late, should come in and add a bit of creativity.

Jürgen Klopp picked his strongest available XI for the first leg, something he rarely does in this competition, but will now do the same for this second meeting.
This is personified by the fact Alisson made his League Cup debut in goal a week ago, displacing quarter-final hero Caoimhín Kelleher.
Klopp does not have any injury concerns at the back, meaning Joël Matip is expected to continue alongside Virgil van Dijk.
In midfield though, Thiago Alcântara is injured and Naby Keïta is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
So, Curtis Jones could keep his place from the weekend, starting over James Milner who got the nod in the first leg.
The Reds’ are, of course, short up front with Mo Salah and Sadio Mané at AFCON and Divock Origi currently injured.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could get the nod against his former club, displacing Takumi Minamino who squandered the golden chance last Thursday.
