Ecuador vs Uruguay match preview

After making the perfect start to World Cup qualifying on Friday night, can Uruguay make it two victories out of two in Quito?

Four nights ago, Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure as Uruguay manager began in style, defeating his former employers Chile 3-1 in Montevideo.

Nicolás de la Cruz scoring twice at Estadio Centenario, with Fede Valverde netting in-between.

La Celeste have qualified for each of the last four World Cups, last missing one in 2006, when they were beaten on penalties by Australia in the inter-continental play-offs.

Now that the top six qualify, with seventh going into that play-off, Uruguay are highly-likely to cruise through this campaign.

Meanwhile, every point counts for Ecuador, given that they start on -3, having fielded Byron Castillo, who may or may not be an ineligible player, during the last cycle.

In general, they limited Argentina to very little at Estadio Monumental, only for Lionel Messi to fire a trademark free-kick into the top corner 12 minutes from time; Hernán Galíndez absolutely powerless to stop it.

So, Félix Sánchez Bas’ side remain on -3 points, desperate to climb off the bottom of the table as quickly as possible, even if there are 17 fixtures, spread over two years, still to come.

Ecuador have actually won their last three home World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, so can they make that four at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado?
