Match preview

2022 has been turbulent for the Republic of Ireland, so will they finish the year with a victory in Ta’ Qali?

From the lows of that defeat in Yerevan, to the highs of hammering Scotland at the Aviva, it’s sure been a rollercoaster.

Stephen Kenny’s team are, of course, targeting Euro 2024 qualification, something made more difficult by the fact France, Netherlands and Greece are in their group.

Ireland are almost certainly guaranteed a play-off place in March 2024 so, unless they pull off a miracle, all focus has to be towards that.

On Thursday, despite Alan Browne’s stunning equaliser, they were beaten 2-1 by Norway in a friendly in Dublin.

So, Kenny will be determined to claim a victory in this one.

Malta meantime held Greece to a 2-2 draw in mid-week, with Jurgen Degabriele and Teddy Teuma the scorers.

So far this year, the Reds have beaten San Marino twice in the Nations League, also recording friendly wins over Azerbaijan, Kuwait and Israel.

Thus, Malta will be no push-overs, but Ireland should be too strong at Grawnd Nazzjonali.
