Japan vs Türkiye match preview

After claiming an historic friendly victory on Saturday night, will Japan have another win to celebrate?

At the weekend, the Samurai Blue hammered beleaguered juggernauts Germany 4-1 at Volkswagen Arena.

Junya Itō and Ayase Ueda both on target in Wolfsburg, before Takuma Asano and Ao Tanaka rubber stamped the victory in stoppage time.

That made it three successive wins for Hajime Moriyasu, following easy victories over both El Salvador and Peru in June, scoring 14 times across these three matches.

Having reached the World Cup knockout stages last year, beating Germany again and Spain en route, Japan are now targeting Asia Cup glory when they return to Qatar next January.

Here, as these two teams go head-to-head for the first time since the 2002 World Cup, Japan beaten 1-0 in the round of 16 clash in Rifu, can they exact some semblance of revenge in Genk?

On Friday night, they required an 88th minute equaliser from Bertuğ Yıldırım to salvage a 1-1 draw with Armenia in Eskişehir.

This leaves Stefan Kuntz’s team on ten points after five Group D matches but, given that the Crescent-Stars still have to visit both Osijek and Cardiff, Turkey have still got plenty of work to do.

On balance, Japan come into this friendly at Cegeka Arena as favourites to prevail.
