Israel vs Czechia match preview

Can Czechia get the result they need to reach the knockout stages?

Having lost their opener against England, Jan Suchopárek’s team bounced back brilliantly at the weekend, recording a shock 2-1 victory over Germany in Batumi.

They took the lead in the first half through a well-worked count-attack; Vasil Kušej dribbling down the left before putting it on a plate for Václav Sejk to tap home.

Germany did equalise mid-way through the second half but, with just two minutes to go, Matěj Jurásek’s corned fell nicely for Martin Vitík who emphatically smashed home.

How crucial could that goal prove to be, with Czech Republic aiming to reach the knockout stages of this competition for the first time in 12 years?

If Czechia avoid defeat here, regardless of the other result, they will go through, knocking out holders Germany in the process.

The Blue and Whites held Germany to a 1-1 draw on matchday one, taking the lead through Dor Turgeman before Eden Kartsev was sent off in first half stoppage time.

So, even though they played over half the game a man light, with the Germans missing two penalties, they held out for a share of the spoils.

Guy Luzon’s team weren’t so fortunate on Sunday though, defeated 2-0 by England, rarely threatening their opponents goal at any stage.

A win here would see Israel leapfrog the Czechs, but may not be enough to see them qualify if Germany are also victorious simultaneously.

Given that those two teams drew, the next tie-breaker is goal-difference; Germany’s is currently -1 to Israel’s -2.

Both Germany and Israel will be eliminated if Czechia avoid defeat, so who will be celebrating come full time at Ramaz Shengelia Stadium?

Israel team news

Eden Kartsev can return to central midfield, having served his one-match ban against England.

Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz saved three penalties in the play-off win over Ireland, also scoring from the spot himself, before stopping a further two penalties against Germany on matchday one.

Czechia team news

Jan Suchopárek made three changes for the Germany game, Michal Fukala, Adam Karabec and Matěj Valenta starting, so it’ll be interesting to see if he sticks with a winning team.
