Haiti vs Qatar match preview

Qatar are back at the CONCACAF Gold Cup because.. you know…money, so will they do even better than two summers ago?

Back in 2021, the Maroons topped their group with seven points, beat El Salvador 3-2 in the quarter-finals before falling to USA in the semis in Austin, a game they probably should’ve won.

Since then, of course, Qatar have made their World Cup debut, embarrassingly losing all three matches last November, thereby becoming the worst-performing hosts in the the tournament’s history.

Their new man in charge is the vastly experienced Carlos Queiroz, who’s previously taken charge of Portugal (twice), UAE, South Africa, Iran (twice), Colombia and Egypt.

His aims will be to help Qatar retain the Asia Cup, which they’re hosting in January, and of course qualify for the 2026 World Cup, a task made vastly more achievable by the fact AFC now has 8/9 spots.

Haiti meantime qualified for this tournament by topping their Nations League B group back in March, winning five of six fixtures against Guyana, Bermuda and Montserrat.

This promotion to League A means les Grenadiers are in contention to qualify for next year’s Copa América, having previously featured at the Centenario edition in 2016.

At the Gold Cup, Haiti enjoyed their best-ever run at this competition four years ago, winning all three group games and then coming from 2-0 down to defeat Canada in the quarters, before falling to Mexico in the semis.

With Mexico and Honduras completing a competitive Group B line-up, Jean-Jacques Pierre’s team will know kicking off with a victory in Houston is vitally important.

Will the Asian champions prevail at NRG Stadium, or can Haiti spring a surprise?

Haiti team news

Duckens Nazon was one of the Haitian heroes at this tournament four years ago, scoring in the wins over Costa Rica and Canada.

The CSKA Sofia striker is set to lead the line, potentially supported by Derrick Etienne Jr. and Frantzdy Pierrot.

Carnejy Antoine’s international goal-scoring record is frightening, having netted 12 times in just 16 caps so far.

Meanwhile, FafĂ  Picault, who played for the U.S. in two friendlies in 2016 and 2018, has switched allegiance in time for this tournament, so is set to make his debut.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): A. Pierre; Séance, Alexis, Adé; Arcus, Saba, L. Pierre, Guerrier; Pierrot, Etienne, Nazon.

Qatar team news

Since Carlos Queiroz’s appointment in February, he’s made wholesale changes to this Qatari squad.

Eight players, Saad Al-Sheeb, Abdelkarim Hassan, Boualem Khoukhi, RĂł-RĂł, Karim Boudiaf, Abdulaziz Hatem, Akram Afif and Hassan Al-Haydos, who have a humongous 902 caps between them, have all not been called up since the World Cup, so appear to have no national team futures.

Afif was in the team of the tournament two summers ago, while Al-Haydos is also ultra-talented, so some of these decisions are curious, with Qatar undoubtedly weaker that they were coming into the 2021 edition.

They do still have Almoez Ali, who won the Gold Cup golden boot two years ago, netting 42 times overall, needing one more to break Mansour Muftah’s national record that’s stood for 23 years.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Barsham; Kheder, Al-Rawi, Salman, Ahmed; Madibo, Assadalla, Fatehi; Abdurisag, Muntari, Ali.
