Georgia vs Israel match preview

Georgia are making their debut at this summer’s under-21 European Championships, qualifying as hosts, and the campaign could hardly have gone any better so far.

Ramaz Svanadze’s team kicked off by beating Portugal 2-0, before back-to-back draws with Belgium and then Netherlands saw them not only reach the quarter-finals, doing so as group winners.

The Crusaders came from 2-0 down to earn a share of the spoils with Belgium before, on Tuesday, Zuriko Davitashvili magnificent solo goal was enough to secure the point they needed against Holland.

In both of their last two games, Georgia have broken the single-game attendance record at a U21 Euros, with over 43,00 spectators cheering them on against the Dutch this week.

The national stadium in Tbilisi will be packed to the rafters once again, so will the home crowd roar their team onto another momentous victory?

Israel will be looking to play the role of party-poopers; they too have reached the knockout phase for the very first time.

The decisive moment came just eight minutes from time, when Oscar Gloukh’s cross was headed home at the back post by Omri Gandelman, sparking wild celebrations in Kutaisi.

Before this, Guy Luzon’s side had held Germany to a 1-1 draw, despite being down to ten-men for over half the game, before a comprehensive 2-0 defeat at the hands of England.

Now though, Israel are just 90 minutes away from a place in the semi-finals, and qualification for next summer’s Olympic Games in France.

Will the enormous home crowd at Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena roar Georgia into the semi-finals?

Whoever prevails will take on Portugal or England in Batumi on Wednesday.

Georgia team news

Heorhiy Tsitaishvili, who came off the bench to score against Belgium, was recalled to the starting XI on Tuesday, so is likely to keep his place in midfield.

Eight players would miss a potential semi-final if booked here. They are:

Giorgi Mamardashvili, Aleksandre Kalandadze, Zuriko Davitashvili, Anzor Mekvabishvili, Giorgi Gagua, Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Irakli Azarovi and Nodar Lominadze.

Israel team news

Roy Revivo will sit out this game suspended, while goalkeeper Daniel Peretz as well as Gil Cohen, Omri Gandelman, Eden Kartsev and Oscar Gloukh continue to walk that particular tightrope.

If this tie goes to penalties, Peretz is a man to be feared.

He saved two spot-kicks against Germany on matchday one, having kept out there in the play-off victory over Republic of Ireland, also scoring one of his own in that shootout.
