Georgia vs Belgium match preview

After claiming a shock win on their under-21 European Championships debut, can Georgia cause another upset?

On Wednesday, on the tournament’s opening night, Ramaz Svanadze’s team defeated 2021 finalists Portugal 2-0 in Tbilisi.

They broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, Giorgi Gagua pouncing on some lackadaisical defending before lashing home.

Then, on the cusp of half time, Heorhiy Tsitaishvili’s corner picked out Saba Sazonov who headed home, unmarked from mere picometres out.

2-0 it finished, much to the delight of the 25,000 supporters in attendance, so can the co-hosts and tournament debutants now book their place in the quarter-finals?

Elsewhere in Tbilisi, Belgium played out a rather less memorable goalless draw with Netherlands on matchday one.

Loïs Openda went through one on one, but he could not find the finish, before Michel-Ange Balikwisha forced a smart save in the second half, with neither side able to make the breakthrough.

The Red Devils are still searching for their first u21 Euros win since 2007, really needing to pick up points here to keep their knockout phase hopes alive.

Roared on by a huge, partisan home crowd, can Georgia claim another surprise win at Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena?

Georgia team news

Having featured for the senior team in Glasgow less than 20 hours earlier, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Zuriko Davitashvili, Luka Gagnidze and Giorgi Gocholeishvili were all left on the bench against Portugal.

Although, Davitashvili did come on for the final 25 minutes on that win.

Now, after some genuine rest time, they could all come into the side, with Ramaz Svanadze possibly tempted to change a winning formulae.

Belgium team news

Charles De Ketelaere and Loïs Openda will continue to feature in a fearsome front line

Goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt was excellent against Holland three days ago, while Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin will be hoping to keep his place in midfield, chosen over Aster Vranckx.
