Faroe Islands vs Moldova match preview

Group E’s two rank-outsiders go head-to-head in Tórshavn, with both hoping to claim a rare victory.

Moldova are actually aiming to claim back-to-back European qualifiers victories for the first time since October 2013, having enjoyed, arguably, the most memorable win of their entire history during the summer.

In June, despite being 2-0 down at half time, Serghei Cleșcenco’s side fought back to beat Poland 3-2 in Chișinău.

Star striker Ion Nicolaescu scoring twice, thereby getting them back on level terms, before Vladislav Baboglo headed home a dramatic equaliser, completing the turnaround and sparking wild celebrations.

This actually takes Moldova’s points tally up to five, having previously held both Faroe Islands and Czechia to draws at Stadionul Zimbru, before a 2-0 defeat in Tirana.

The Tricolorii have lost just two of their last 11 competitive matches and, following Thursday’s friendly draw with Austria in Linz, Moldova come into this one full of confidence.

Håkan Ericson’s side were beaten 3-0 by Czech Republic and 3-1 by Albania in June, before two late Robert Lewandowski goals condemned them to defeat at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw this week.

The Landsliðið have now won onlu four of their last 24 competitive outings, although all of these victories have come at home.

Also, all three of the Faroe’s qualification victories in the last seven years have occoured at Tórsvøllur, including beating Moldova 2-1 exactly two years ago last Thursday.

So, can the Faroe Islands make home advantage count here too?

Faroe Islands team news

Striker Klæmint Olsen was on target when his team beat Moldova two years ago, one of ten international goals to his name, although the most-recent of those came in Israel in November 2021.

Moldova team news

Ion Nicolaescu is Moldova’s main marksman, taking his tally to 12 with a brace in the famous victory against Poland.

Alongside could be Vitalie Damașcan, after his goal in Thursday’s friendly at Raiffeisen Arena.
