Hibernian vs Inter Club d’Escaldes match preview

After, what many are calling the most embarrassing result in Scottish football history, believe me, there’s some stiff competition, can Hibernian avoid a shock exit?

Last Thursday, most expected Hibs to leave Estadi Comunal d’Andorra la Vella in a commanding position, but that’s certainly not how it played out.

A week ago, Adrià Gallego broke the deadlock after a quarter of an hour, firing home at the second attempt after his initial effort had been saved by David Marshall.

Then, with 20 minutes to go, it got even better for Inter Club d’Escaldes; a tame shot was spilled by Marshall, with Jean Luc on hand to tap in from close-range.

Just as the clock struck 90, Hibernian did get back into this tie, with Joe Newell’s free-kick flying under the wall, around the draught-excluder and into the net, despite Adrià Muñoz getting a hand to it.

So, 2-1 it finished in Andorra la Vella, meaning the Hibees have work to do ahead of this rematch in Edinburgh.

Last time round, two years ago, they did beat Andorran opposition, hammering Santa Coloma 3-0 at home, needing a similar result in this second leg.

Inter Club d’Escaldes meantime, having overcome Víkingur Gøta in the previous round, require just a draw in the Scottish capital to reach the third qualifying round for the very first time.

Will Hibs complete a comeback to spare their blushes at Easter Road?

The winners of this tie will take on Rosenborg or Crusaders in the UEFA Europa Conference League third qualifying round.

Hibernian team news

Veteran goalkeeper David Marshall was, arguably, at fault for both of Inter’s goals last Thursday, so new signing Jojo Wollacott, who is Ghana’s number one, could make his debut here.

Dylan Levitt and Adam Le Fondre did make their Hibs debuts in Andorra, although Levitt was hooked at half time.

In a friendly against Blackpool on Saturday, Martin Boyle saw action for the first time since October, and his return is a major boost.

Inter Club d’Escaldes team news

Sascha Andreu, who got the decisive goal in the previous round, will remain Inter’s primary goal threat.
