As the countdown to Euro 2020 continues, 101 sat down with ex-Liverpool and Spain left-back Jose Enrique to discuss Spain’s chances of going all the way this summer.
Enrique, who spent nine years in England playing for Newcastle United and Liverpool, appeared several times at youth level for Spain, but never got the call up to the national team proper. However, the left-back did make over one hundred appearances in the Premier League, as well as winning the League Cup with Liverpool.
And we asked him how he feels his home nation will fare at the upcoming tournament.
The Spaniard replied:
“I have to be honest? [Laughs]. To be honest, I don’t know. Obviously they [Spain] are one of the favourite teams to win it. I really hope they have a good tournament and hopefully they win it obviously but I don’t know.”
“I’m not 100% with the squad that we’re taking. If you compare this squad with the ones we actually won trophies with, you can’t compare one bit.”

“Obviously they are great players, we have very very good players on the team, but it’s going to be very very difficult for us to win it. But hopefully I’m wrong and we do”.
“I don’t think you can compare Xavis, Iniesta’s, Xabi Alonso’s to this group of players, they were unique.”
“I really believe we have a good team to fight against anyone in the competition, don’t get me wrong. But, for example, if you look at our squad and you look at France’s squad at some point you think “we don’t have too much”. That’s the reality, but like I say, it’s football, and in football anything can happen. But I think that there are stronger teams and stronger squads at the tournament.”
Spain have been drawn in a group alongside Sweden, Poland and Slovakia, and will be the favourites to progress as group winners, although they are currently without two players due to covid.
La Roja begin their tournament on Monday, taking on Sweden at Sevilla’s Estadio de la Cartuja.
