Match preview

Two sides in the midst of altogether contrasting spells of recent form are set to lock horns in a Championship clash at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, January 22nd.

The matchup in question will see Sunderland act as hosts, in a meeting with red-hot Middlesbrough.

Starting with the former, Sunderland, after an impressive pair of victories to round out last year, have since been brought back down to earth over the course of the last couple of weeks.

First, the Black Cats were held to a disappointing stalemate by relegation-battling Blackpool.

Then, last time out, Tony Mowbray’s troops were made to pay for an early Luke O’Nien red card, en route to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Swansea City.

After surging from the thick of the relegation scrap to the fringes of the promotion playoff battle, Sunderland, in turn, have been dragged back to mid-table ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Safe to say, then, that the Black Cats could do with a return to winning ways in the final fixture of the weekend in England’s 2nd tier.

Such a result, though, will prove far from easy to come by, if recent evidence is anything to go by.

This comes with Sunderland’s upcoming opponents having enjoyed an altogether more fruitful time of things of late.

After spending the bulk of the early months of the term scrapping it out towards the foot of the table, Middlesbrough, under the watch of Michael Carrick, have gotten things back on track in nothing short of spectacular fashion of late.

All told, dating back to early November, Boro have rattled off seven league wins from eight.

Four such victories have come in succession over the course of the last three weeks, the most recent of which saw a solitary Marcus Forss effort prove enough to put Millwall to the sword.

The Yorkshire-based outfit, in turn, have climbed into the promotion playoff spots, in the knowledge that a fifth win on the spin on Sunday would guide them clear of both Watford and Blackburn, into 3rd.

And we at 101 are backing Carrick and co. to manage precisely that at Sunderland’s expense, come the full-time whistle at the Stadium of Light later today.
