Coventry City vs Sunderland match preview

A Coventry City outfit eyeing a return to winning ways are set to act as hosts this weekend, when they welcome Sunderland to England’s west Midlands for a Championship showdown on Saturday, August 26th.

The Sky Blues, for their part, have endured something of a hit-and-miss start to the new campaign.

After surrendering a late advantage en route to a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City on opening day, Mark Robins’ troops were sent packing from the EFL Cup, too, at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.

A three-goal drubbing of Middlesbrough a fortnight ago, in turn, could not have come at a better time.

Then, last time out, Coventry made the trip to Swansea, hopeful of kickstarting a push up the table, courtesy of a 2nd successive victory.

When all was said and done, however, they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, after Matt Godden’s third goal of the term was quickly cancelled out by Jerry Yates.

Turning attentions towards Saturday’s visitors, Sunderland, too, kicked their endeavours for 2022/23 into gear in altogether concerning fashion.

In fact, Tony Mowbray’s men were condemned to no fewer than three straight defeats across all competitions.

First up came a 2-1 downing at home to table-topping Ipswich Town, before the Black Cats also fell at the first hurdle in the EFL Cup, ousted on penalties by Crewe Alexandra.

Upon Jack Clarke’s solitary strike proving to be little more than a consolation in yet another loss at Preston North End, alarm bells, understandably, began ringing in Tyne and Wear.

Safe to say, then, that a first three-point haul of the season came as a welcome relief for all associated with Sunderland last weekend.

Summer addition Jobe Bellingham proved himself the hero, bagging a brace en route to a 2-1 triumph over Rotherham United at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats, in turn, sit 15th in the table in England’s 2nd tier, a point back of their upcoming hosts.

So, all of this considered, how do we at 101 envision proceedings playing out at the Coventry Building Society Arena later today?

Though an eventual stalemate should not be ruled out, we are backing hosts Coventry to prove just too much for a Sunderland side still finding their feet.
