Coventry City vs Middlesbrough match preview

The 2nd of the weekend’s Championship playoff semi-final first-legs is set to play out at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, May 14th.

The matchup in question will see Coventry City act as hosts, in a meeting with Middlesbrough.

Beginning with the former, Coventry are no doubt primed to head into this afternoon’s action with confidence brimming in the camp.

This comes with the Sky Blues having finished out the campaign as one of the most in-form sides in England’s 2nd tier.

All told, dating back to February, Mark Robins’ troops have fallen to just a solitary defeat in their last 17 outings.

Even more crucial, though, were wins in three of their last five.

Turning attentions towards Sunday’s visitors, Boro’s close to the term did not prove quite as productive as that of their hosts-in-waiting.

Taking their foot off the gas after long sewing up a playoff berth, Michael Carrick’s high-flyers managed wins in just two of their last eight fixtures.

After being condemned to defeat in back-to-back fixtures by Luton Town and Rotherham United, Middlesbrough did at least manage to steady the ship last weekend, when Cameron Archer’s equaliser late in the first-half proved enough to hold Coventry to a draw.

But, after not long ago looking like (Burnley aside) the Championship’s standout side, the point remains that the Yorkshire outfit will head into Sunday’s action largely out of form.

Will Boro be able to ‘flick the switch’, returning to their free-flowing best to take a first-leg advantage back to the Riverside next week?

We at 101 are not so sure, therefore backing the two sides to ultimately cancel each other out, en route to an eventual stalemate in Coventry later today.
