Match preview

Two sides in the midst of altogether contrasting trajectories in the Championship table are set to lock horns at Bloomfield Road on New Year’s Day.

The clash in question will see relegation-battling Blackpool play host to a Sunderland outfit fast surging up the standings in England’s 2nd tier.

Starting with the former, Blackpool, of course, have endured a trying last couple of months.

Dating back to late October, the seasiders have failed to notch a single victory, across no fewer than eight attempts.

In their most recent outing, Michael Appleton’s troops saw Marvin Ekpiteta’s 2nd-half strike prove little more than a consolation, en route to a hard-fought defeat at the hands of Sheffield United.

Such woes, in turn, have culminated in Blackpool slipping into the bottom three, staring the prospect of relegation square in the face.

So dire is the situation that, in fact, anything other than a victory on Sunday night could leave Appleton and co. sitting dead bottom of the table.

Such a result, though, will not prove at all easy to come by.

This comes with upcoming opponents Sunderland having enjoyed an altogether more fruitful time of things of late.

The Black Cats are fresh off two wins on the trot and, dating back to the middle of last month, four victories from six.

The latest came this past Thursday, in dominant fashion, when Tony Mowbray’s men put four goals past struggling Wigan Athletic.

In a blow to their hopes moving forward, though, one of Sunderland’s goalscorers at the DW Stadium, in the form of Ellis Simms, will be unavailable for selection in Tyne and Wear for the remainder of the campaign.

The youngster, who had enjoyed a fine season to date, has been recalled by parent club Everton for the 2nd-half of the term.

Nevertheless, the Black Cats will be confident in their chances of kicking on to a third successive three-point haul on Sunday, to build ever further on their spot in 4th in the Championship table.

And we at 101 are backing the visitors to manage precisely that come the full-time whistle at Bloomfield Road.
