Young Boys vs Maccabi Haifa match preview

After last Thursday’s first leg at Sammy Ofer Stadium finished all square, it’s winner takes all in Bern.

Six nights ago, these two domestic champions played out a cagy scoreless draw in Israel, meaning we’re no closer to knowing which of the two will reach the group phase.

Maccabi Haifa did qualify for the Champions League group stages just last season, getting there for the first time since 2009, ousting Crvena zvezda in the play-offs back then.

However, the Greens have won just three of their last 14 European home games and, having only managed a draw at home, Messay Dego’s team are certainly underdogs to get through now.

BSC Young Boys meantime are aiming to get into the group phase for the third time, having previously competed at the highest level of European football in 2018 and 2022.

The Swiss champions have lost only four of their last 16 home matches in European competition, although one of these defeats did come 12 months ago, ousted in the Europa Conference League play-offs by Anderlecht.
