Match preview

Last week’s win ended what had been a miserable run in Europe for Marseille, who had lost 16 of their 17 previous matches before the 4-1 runaway triumph at the Stade Velodrome.

It kept their knockout hopes alive despite Igor Tudor’s side being rooted to the bottom of Group D and there will be renewed hope within the squad thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez, Amine Harit, Leonardo Balerdi and Chancel Mbemba even after going one goal down in the opening minute, although that hope will have been somewhat dampened by a 2-1 home defeat to Ajaccio in Ligue 1 at the weekend.

That means they have dropped back to third place behind PSG and Lorient and facing a tough trip to the Estadio de Sao Miguel on Wednesday and potentially able to move up to the top of the table.

In their way stand a Sporting side smarting from last week’s defeat, having bounced back with a 2-1 win over Santa Clara at the weekend.

They have generally been impressive in Europe, and will hope the defeat on the road was something of an aberration. There are likely to be goals in this game and the result is likely to be hard to call, though Sporting will fancy themselves to claim revenge on the French side, even without the suspended Antonio Adan.
