Servette vs Genk match preview

Servette are back in the Champions League after 24 years away, so will it be worth the wait?

This is just the third time the Swiss side have qualified for UEFA’s premier club competition in the modern era, previously beaten in qualifiers by Steaua București and Sturm Graz in 1994 and 1999 respectively.

More recently, les Grenats have lost in Europa-based qualifiers against Reims and Molde, so Servette are seeking to reach a European group stage for the first time ever.

Having finished second in last season’s Swiss Super League, René Weiler’s team will achieve this if they get through this tie, hoping to establish a healthy advantage in Geneva.

Genk are much more familiar faces on the European scene, featuring in eight group stages, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Europa League two seasons later.

The Smurfs missed out on the Belgian title in the final minute of the final day back in May, so Wouter Vrancken’s team face a tough path if they’re to take Genk back into the Champions League.

The winners of this tie will take on Rangers in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

The losers drop into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, where they’ll face Olympiacos.
