Raków Częstochowa vs København match preview

Raków Częstochowa have already made history in Europe this season, so will their adventure take them all the way into the Champions League group stages?

The Medallions made their debut in UEFA competition as recently as 2021, falling in the Europa Conference League play-offs in each of the last two seasons, ousted by Gent and Slavia Prague.

Now, having won their first-ever Ekstraklasa title, Raków are getting their first crack at the Champions League and are certainly grasping this opportunity.

So far, Dawid Szwarga’s side have knocked out Flora Tallinn, Qarabağ and Aris Limassol, and are yet to lose a match, winning five out of six.

As a result, Raków Częstochowa will make their debut in a UEFA group phase next month, at worst this’ll be in the Europa League, but the Polish champions are dreaming of the Champions League.

FC København are now strangers to the Champions League group stages, having featured at that level on five ocassions, including last season.

As they aim to repeat that feat, the Superligaen champions hammered Breiðablik 8-3 in the second qualifying round, before finding Sparta Prague tougher opposition.

The pair drew 0-0 in Copenhagen before a thrilling 3-3 draw in Czechia last Tuesday, in which four goals were scored during extra time, with Viktor Claesson twice on target for the visitors.

In the subsequent shootout at Stadion Letná, Sparta failed to convert two of their four spot-kicks meaning, when 17 year old Rūnī Bardaḡdjī put a Panenka penalty past the goalkeeper, København were through.

Jacob Neestrup’s team do come into this tie as favourites, but will certainly not be underestimating their Polish hosts.

Raków’s usual home Miejski Stadion Piłkarski does not meet UEFA requirements, so this first leg will take place at Zagłębiowski Park Sportowy, 38 miles south of Częstochowa in Środula.

Regardless, with the second leg at Parken to come, Raków will feel this clash in Sosnowiec is must win.
