Royal Antwerp vs AEK Athens match preview
After an extremely dramatic victory over GNK Dinamo Zagreb, will AEK Athens keep their Champions League dreams alive?
In the third qualifying round, the Greek champions looked set to cruise through, following a 2-1 victory in Zagreb last Tuesday.
However, in Saturday’s delayed, return meeting in Athens, AEK found themselves 2-0, thereby staring down the barrel of elimination.
Sergio Araújo got them back level on aggregate in the second minute of injury time before, as the clock struck 90+10, Domagoj Vida found a winner, sparking wild celebrations at Agia Sophia Stadium.
AEK are guaranteed to feature in a first UEFA group stage since 2020, but Matías Almeyda is still hoping to take the Greek champions back into the Champions League for the first time since 2018.
In their way are Royal Antwerp, who enter at this stage having won their first Belgian title since 1957 in June, achieved courtesy of Toby Alderweireld’s 94th minute equaliser away to Genk on the final day of the season.
So, amazingly, this’ll be Antwerp’s first match in this competition for 66 years, hammered 8-2 by Real Madrid in the European Cup first round back then, with Alfredo Di Stéfano the scorer of two goals in Belgium.
In more modern times, the Grand Old got into the Europa League group stages in both 2020 and 2021, before being dumped out in the Europa Conference League play-offs by İstanbul Başakşehir 12 months ago.
Make no mistake about it though, this is a huge occasion for Mark van Bommel’s team, so can Antwerp establish a first leg lead at Bosuilstadion?
