Mainz’s fantastic rise up the Bundesliga table will get a huge test this weekend when they meet with Freiburg at the MEWA Arena where the home side are in eighth and creeping up on the European spots.
Mainz excellent unbeaten run continued last week, as they dropped points for the first time in four games after drawing with Hertha Berlin to make it six weeks without a loss.
Bo Svensson’s men would defeat Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim in this time, with their only losses since the World Cup coming against three of the top four (Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin).
Freiburg remain in fifth but are out of the Europa League after a 2-0 loss to Juventus at Stade Europa-Park which now leaves them to focus on their DFB-Pokal battle with Bayern Munich in two weeks.
Freiburg come into this one with the same amount of points as Union and RB Leipzig just above them, so the club could jump into third if other results go in their favour.
