Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig match preview

For the second successive season, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig will go head-to-head in the DFL-Supercup.

12 months ago, Bayern Munich won an eight-goal thriller at Red Bull Arena, prevailing 5-3, thereby picking up their tenth Supercup, six of which have come in the last seven seasons.

Bayern have featured in every edition of this competition since 2011, but that streak very nearly came to an end.

Back in May, die Roten snatched the Bundesliga title on the final day, courtesy of Jamal Musiala’s 89th minute winner against Köln, coupled with Dortmund’s 2-2 draw against Mainz simultaneously.

This was their 11th successive Meisterschale; not team had won more than three in a row beforehand.

During the season, Bayern sacked Julian Nagelsmann and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel, who will certainly be hoping for a calmer campaign this time round.

Here, Raphaël Guerreiro, Kim Min-jae and Konrad Laimer, the latter against the club he’s just left, could all make their Bayern debuts, so will they win yet another Supercup?

RB Leipzig meantime have captured back-to-back DFB-Pokal trophies, defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in June’s final at Olympiastadion.

However, this is likely to be a season of transition for die Roten Bullen, who’ve had a busy summer, both in terms of arrivals and departures.

Both scorers in the final, Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai, have been sold, with Joško Gvardiol, Alexander Sørloth, André Silva and Angeliño all also departing, brining in over €235 million.

Benjamin Šeško and Nicolas Seiwald have both come in from RB Salzburg, big money has also been spent on both Loïs Openda and Christoph Baumgartner, with Xavi Simons and Fábio Carvalho joining on loan.

So, once again, Marco Rose’s side will be amongst the favourites to get back into the Champions League, with Leipzig also challenging for silverware, starting here.

This game, as it did last year, should provide plenty of goals, but Bayern are likely to lift a fourth successive DFL-Supercup at Allianz Arena.
