Barcelona v Atletico Madrid: Confirmed line-ups for Champions League clash

The Champions League quarter-finals have a habit of throwing up familiar foes, but tonight’s clash at the Camp Nou feels particularly charged.

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid meet for the first leg of their European tie just days after a bruising La Liga encounter that saw the Blaugrana edge a 2-1 victory.

Barcelona are currently on an imperious run, winning eight of their last nine matches across all competitions. Their path to the quarter-finals was a statement of intent, as they dismantled Newcastle United 8-3 on aggregate in the previous round.

At home, they have turned the Camp Nou into a goal-scoring factory, averaging over three goals per game in Europe this season. However, Flick will have to navigate tonight’s tactical chess match without Raphinha, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

For Atlético Madrid, the Champions League has become the ultimate “save our season” mission. While they sit comfortably in the top four domestically, their recent form has been uncharacteristically fragile, suffering three consecutive defeats including that weekend loss to Barça.

The biggest blow for Simeone’s side is the continued absence of goalkeeper Jan Oblak. But historically, this is a fixture that Atlético Madrid have used to cause Barcelona immense pain in Europe, famously eliminating them at this stage in 2014 and 2016.

Here’s how the sides match up tonight.

Barcelona team news

Marcus Rashford comes into the side to replace key man Raphinha while Jules Kounde and Dani Olmo also start. Fermin Lopez is on a strong looking bench.

Barcelona XI: Joan García, João Cancelo, Gerard Martín, Pau Cubarsí, Jules Koundé, Pedri, Eric García, Marcus Rashford, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski

Atletico Madrid team news

Veteran Koke comes into the Atletico team with Joao Cardoso out through injury. Oblak is indeed still missing while former Manchester City man Julian Alvarez will hope to shine in attack once more.

Atletico XI: Juan Musso, Matteo Ruggeri, Dávid Hancko, Robin Le Normand, Nahuel Molina, Ademola Lookman, Koke, Marcos Llorente, Giuliano Simeone, Julián Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann
