Premier League round-up: Aston Villa leave it late as Burnley stun Palace

Five big games were on the cards for Wednesday’s palette of action, with some huge implications on the line for the Premier League title race.

Manchester City hosted Fulham with the opportunity to move within three points of leaders Arsenal, while Liverpool travelled to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest met Wolves in a huge battle at the bottom of the standings, as was Crystal Palace’s clash with Burnley.

In the Midlands, Aston Villa welcomed Brighton, with the home side looking to keep pace with City and cement their place in the Champions League places.

You can catch up with the best of the action from around the grounds in this latest round of Premier League fixtures:

Aston Villa 1-0 Brighton: Mings wins it at the death

Aston Villa edged past Brighton 1-0 at Villa Park after a tight match with very few clear chances.

The game looked set to finish goalless until the 86th minute, when Tyrone Mings met Leon Bailey’s cross with a header that deflected off Jack Hinshelwood and went in, later recorded as an own goal.

Brighton pushed late but rarely tested Emiliano Martinez, while Ross Barkley’s stoppage-time effort flew wide and failed to settle it.

Both sides struggled to create throughout, with Brighton’s best chance a long-range strike tipped onto the bar by Martínez.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Wolves: Stalemate at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest were held to a 0-0 draw by bottom-placed Wolves at the City Ground. The hosts dominated, recording 35 shots, but Jose Sa’s goalkeeping and some skewed finishing denied the hosts a crucial win.

In the first half, Forest controlled play. Gibbs-White headed wide from Anderson’s cross, Hudson-Odoi drew saves, and Lucca missed from close range. Wolves reached the break without a shot on target after facing 16 attempts.

In the second half, the pressure continued. Sa made outstanding stops from Jesus and Morato on 77 minutes and finished with ten saves. Wolves nearly stole it late on the counter, Ortega saving, as boos greeted full-time.

Crystal Palace 2-3 Burnley: Clarets stun Eagles

Burnley players celebrate dramatic turnaround at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace suffered a damaging home defeat as Burnley fought back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Selhurst Park.

The hosts made the brighter start and were ahead in the 17th minute. Adam Wharton clipped a measured pass over the defence and Jorgen Strand Larsen controlled before finishing beyond Dubravka. Palace were comfortable for much of the opening half-hour and doubled their lead on 33 minutes, when Jefferson Lerma’s cross was met by Strand Larsen, who stooped to head into the bottom corner.

The match changed rapidly before the interval. Burnley pulled a goal back in the 40th minute as Marcus Edwards found Hannibal Mejbri on the edge of the area and he guided a low finish past Henderson. Four minutes later the visitors were level, Jaidon Anthony cutting in from the left and beating the goalkeeper at his near post after being released by Lesley Ugochukwu.

Burnley completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time when a corner was flicked on by Humphreys and diverted into his own net by Lerma.

Palace dominated possession after the break and created several opportunities but could not find an equaliser.
