Premier League round-up: Clarke gives promoted Ipswich winning start as Everton and Leeds prevail

Jack Clarke scored a 90th-minute winner as Ipswich Town celebrated their return to the Premier League campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

An entertaining game at Portman Road looked set to end with the spoils being shared after Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo’s fine free-kick cancelled out Emersonn’s opener for Ipswich.

But there was a sting in the tail as Clarke, who left Sunderland for Ipswich in 2024, punished a poor pass from Omar Alderete by curling into the far corner to ensure Ipswich emulated fellow new boys Hull City in winning their opening game after the Tigers stunned Manchester United 2-0.

Stach gives Leeds late win over Forest

Oliver Glasner made a disappointing start to life as Nottingham Forest boss as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds United.

Anton Stach was the difference for Daniel Farke’s men, the German whipping beyond Matz Sels two minutes from the end of normal time following a rash foul by Nikola Milenkovic.

Milenkovic had earlier hit the post and Igor Jesus went close with two headers for Forest, but they could not prevent from Leeds claiming their first win at the City Ground since 1972.

Everton cruise past Palace

Glasner’s former club Crystal Palace came away with nothing from their first game under new boss Pierre Sage, as Everton eased to a 2-0 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees emerged victorious from their opening match of the campaign for the first time in five years thanks to goals from Kieran Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry.

Dewsbury-Hall broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time as he arrowed beyond Dean Henderson.

Barry doubled the lead eight minutes into the second half, heading home from an excellent cross from Iliman Ndiaye.

Palace, who left Ismaila Sarr out of the squad amid speculation around a move to Galatasaray, lost Chadi Riad to injury on what proved a painful afternoon for the Eagles.
