Liverpool 0-3 Crystal Palace: Report, result and goals as Reds suffer sixth defeat in seven
The Eagles picked up their third successive win over Arne Slot's team
Liverpool suffered their sixth defeat in seven matches in all competitions as they were eliminated in the EFL Cup Fourth Round by Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Palace, who made it three successive wins over Arne Slot’s side, began the Reds’ miserable run when they grabbed a last-minute winners at Selhurst Park in the Premier League back in September.
Victory this time, however, was far more comfortable with Ismaila Sarr grabbing a first-half brace as Oliver Glasner named a strong Eagles side against a much-changed Liverpool team.
The hosts’ misery was compounded when they were reduced to 10 men after substitute Amara Nallo was sent off before Yeremy Pino added the proverbial icing with a goal three minutes from time.
How the action unfolded
The first chance of the game fell Liverpool’s way, Federico Chiesa blasting over from just inside the box.
The Italian, playing as the focal point up front, was proving to be an early threat for the hosts. Minutes later he drew a stop from Walter Benitez from a tight angle after some good build-up play by Rio Ngumoha.
But that was about as good as it got for the Reds in the opening period.
Five minutes before half-time, a ball into the box from Daichi Kamada towards Daniel Munoz ricocheted off Joe Gomez before falling kindly to Sarr. The Senegalese international lashed the ball beyond debutant Freddie Woodman and into the bottom corner.
Just moments later, it was two; Sarr exchanging a slick one-two with Yeremy Pino before burying the finish to double his, and his team’s, tally going into the break.
Liverpool’s evening would soon go from bad to worse when Nallo saw red for hauling down Justin Devenny as the Northern Ireland player was about to race clear.
Aided by the numerical advantage, Palace pushed forward and were rewarded with a third goal in the 87th minute when Pino swept home a fine finish into the far corner to wrap up the victory.
