Preview for Philadelphia Eagles @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Two of the NFL’s remaining undefeated teams meet on Sunday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Philadelphia Eagles at Raymond James Stadium.
Tampa Bay and Philadelphia have met in the playoffs in two of the last four seasons, with the Buccaneers triumphant at home on both occasions.
And though only three weeks of the season have been played, this matchup can be billed as a potential playoff preview.
The defending Super Bowl-champion Eagles have not enjoyed a convincing start to their title defence, with their offense failing to fire on all cylinders and all of their wins coming by a single score.
It took a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown by Jordan Davis for the Eagles to survive against the Los Angeles Rams in a game in which they recovered from a 26-7 deficit.
But the Eagles won’t be able to rely on such fortune every week, and their passing attack will likely need to get going if they are to defeat a Buccaneers team well-equipped to stop running back Saquon Barkley. The Bucs have given up just 3.6 yards per carry so far this season, allowing only 12 first downs on the ground.
On the other side of the ball, the Buccaneers will be without likely future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans with a hamstring injury. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is questionable with a biceps injury but is expected to play. Tackle Tristan Wirfs (knee) is also questionable, as is wideout Chris Godwin as he aims to return from an ankle issue.
Having Godwin back would be a huge boost for the Buccaneers as they face an Eagles secondary expected to be without cornerback Adoree Jackson.
Jackson has struggled in a starting role for Philadelphia this season, but the prospect of the Eagles having to turn to his backup Kelee Ringo leaves the Eagles’ defensive backfield looking even more vulnerable.
Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka will be hoping to take advantage of the weaknesses in the Philadelphia secondary. The first-round pick already has 181 receiving yards and three touchdowns to his name and should view this matchup as one he can exploit.
The Buccaneers have experienced a similar start to the Eagles, their three victories coming by a combined six points. However, if they can hand the Eagles their first loss, that will serve as a huge statement to the league about their own championship credentials.
Prediction for Philadelphia Eagles @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The absence of Evans figures to be a huge factor for the Buccaneers, but they still have the weaponry to take advantage of an Eagles’ defense that has clear depth issues at cornerback.
With home advantage and a quarterback in Mayfield who continues to come through in the clutch, the Buccaneers still have the capability to pull off a narrow win.
Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles 24-28 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
