Fenerbahce vs Liverpool Champions League preview
Liverpool need a response, and they will have to find it against one of their own. Andoni Iraola’s side travel to Istanbul on Wednesday evening to face a Fenerbahçe team now led by former Anfield favourite Dirk Kuyt, three days after a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Kurt had been working as assistant manager, but he was handed the reins on an interim basis after İsmail Kartal stepped down following a 2-1 derby defeat to Galatasaray. Fenerbahçe have said Kuyt will remain in charge “until a new head coach is appointed”.
He is fondly remembered on Merseyside. Kuyt scored 71 goals in 285 appearances over six years at Liverpool, played in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan and won the League Cup in 2012. He also knows Fenerbahçe well, having won the Süper Lig title with them as a player in 2014.
His first game in charge did not go to plan. Fenerbahçe lost 2-1 at home to Göztepe on Saturday, leaving them sixth in the Süper Lig and nine points behind Galatasaray. Kuyt apologised to the supporters afterwards. “I apologise to the Fenerbahçe fans, they deserve better,” he said. “At times, we can be very fragile.”
Things are no better in Europe. Fenerbahçe are 31st in the 36-team table, with just two points from three games. They drew with Roma and Slavia Prague, but were thrashed 6-0 by Aston Villa, and they have conceded nine goals in the competition, joint-most of any team. They have won only one of their last five matches in all competitions.
Liverpool, by contrast, have a perfect record in the Champions League. They have won all three of their league-phase games, against Atlético Madrid, LASK and Villarreal, and they sit in the top four. They have not been watertight, though. They have conceded seven goals in those three games, and their last two Champions League matches produced 16 goals, with a 6-3 win in Austria followed by a 4-3 comeback victory over Villarreal.
Sunday’s defeat at Anfield ended a run of five games without a loss in all competitions, and Iraola will want a quick reaction.
This will be the first time the two clubs have met in European competition.

Fenerbahce vs Liverpool Champions League team news
Ryan Gravenberch has been ruled out with a heel problem. The Dutchman joins Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley on the sidelines.
Dominik Szoboszlai is back in contention, and with Gravenberch missing, he could play in a deeper role in midfield. Szoboszlai has said he is happy to play wherever Iraola needs him: “As a six, getting the ball from Virgil and doing stuff from there. As a 10 I think I can also be dangerous, and as an eight. Wherever he puts me, I try to do my best.”
Víctor Muñoz is pushing for a start ahead of Bradley Barcola or Cody Gakpo, and Iraola could rotate heavily, with this the eighth match in a run of nine games in 29 days. Alexander Isak has six goals in eight games this season, but has yet to score in the Champions League.
For Fenerbahçe, Nathan Ake is out, as is Marco Asensio while Mason Greenwood is a doubt. Ederson is expected to start in goal against his former Premier League rivals.

Fenerbahce vs Liverpool prediction
Fenerbahce have a good side on paper but the defeat at Villa shows that some of their ageing stars have perhaps run out of gas. Liverpool know another win would put them in a great position to qualify and, potentially, rest players towards the end of the league phase.
