BREAKING: Eagles QB Hurts ruled out for season

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for the season due to multiple blood clots in his lungs.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Hurts will be out for three months as he undergoes treatment. The regular season ends on the weekend of January 9/10.

The Eagles discovered a blood clot in Hurts’ leg before their game with the Jacksonville Jaguars in London this month.

The team determined that Hurts could play against the Jags, but he was reportedly told not to sleep beforehand as a precaution. Hurts stayed up for 36 hours ahead of the game, which the Eagles lost 19-17 with the quarterback throwing for 220 yards.

He practiced with no limitations the following Wednesday, but a subsequent ultrasound revealed “movement in the small blood clot”, with Hurts ruled out of Sunday’s defeat to the Carolina Panthers as a result.

Now, with Hurts diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary emboli (blood clots in both lungs) as well as deep vein thrombosis, the 2-4 Eagles face the prospect of sticking with backup Tanner McKee for the rest of the season.

A statement from the Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, read: “Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.

“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. “blood thinners”). During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. we anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition.

“More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects. We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”

McKee thew for 215 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles lost 25-14 to the Panthers. They face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7 on Monday Night Football.
