Cooper Flagg has described joining the Dallas Mavericks as the number one pick in the 2025 NBA draft as “a dream come true”.

The 18-year-old, 6ft 8in forward won the Wooden Award for best college player after inspiring Duke to the NCAA Final Four.

The San Antonio Spurs will combine Dylan Harper with Victor Wembanyama after making the Rutgers point guard the second overall pick.

“My favorite part of the game is doing everything,” Flagg told ESPN. “Blocking shots, helping out your team-mates, playing offense – being on both sides of the ball and winning and impacting at a high level.

“Hearing my name get called and sharing that moment with my mom, my dad and my two brothers is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”

2025 draft picks: Cooper Flagg stats

Flagg led Nokomis Regional to the state title in 2021 and became was the first freshman to be Player of the Year before joining Montverde Academy and winning the 2022 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year and 2024 National High School Player of the Year.

In his only collegiate season, Flagg won Rookie of the Year, was selected for the All-Defensive Team and was named National College Player of the Year, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks in 30.6 minutes across 37 games.

“He’s a savant with the game,” said Duke coach Jon Scheyer. “He just really has an amazing understanding for what’s required to win and how to elevate everyone around him.”

The Maine-born Under-17 World Cup champion’s team lost to the Houston Cougars in the Final Four.
