Manchester United’s new number one transfer target is a defender, the Mirror report. Despite their recent struggles in front of goal, Jose Mourinho’s priorities lie at the back. The Special One wants to shore up what he considers to be a leaky defence. The Red Devils have conceded twelve times in ten Premier League games this season.
Mourinho has set his sights on Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez to solve that problem. However, it will cost United a cool £50m to convince the Spanish giants to part with their prized centre-half. The natural successor to Diego Godin for Uruguay, Atletico want Gimenez to lead their backline long after 30-year-old Godin departs the Calderon.
Chopping and changing
United spent big in the summer and are prepared to spend big again. Although it’s unlikely that any deal could be struck with Atletico in January, opening negotiations in January would smooth a route towards signing the 21-year-old. It’s likely to spell the end of Chris Smalling’s time as a United player. Mourinho doesn’t appear to trust him. Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo could also face the chop.
Eric Bailly, currently injured, has quickly established himself as the club’s best central defender since his £30m move from Villarreal in the summer. Have a look at a Gimenez clearance below.
