Travis Kelce blames himself for Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl capitulation and admits: I wasn’t the best leader

Travis Kelce admitted he could have done more to help his Kansas City Chiefs team-mates in Sunday’s Super Bowl hiding by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs went into the game looking to record an historic three-peat but were overwhelmed as the Eagles cruised to a 40-22 win in New Orleans.

It was Kelce’s fifth Super Bowl appearance but he managed just four catches for 39 yards and was a peripheral figure as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes struggled to get any offense going.

Speaking on a published clip of the New Heights podcast he makes alongside brother Jason, Kelce said: “Just wasn’t our day. Couldn’t find a lick of momentum. I’m kicking myself for some of the tiny, tiny decisions I made on the field.

“I wasn’t the best leader that I could be in motivating my guys and keeping my guys calm, cool and collected and I put a lot of that on myself, you know, as the guy that’s been in the building for 12 years and seen a lot of football and seen a situation just like this, in the Super Bowl.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s a hard reality, man.”

Kelce: I have a beautiful life

Kelce was watched on by superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift and his family and he conceded it was tough to let them down.

He added: “I have loved ones, I have the most amazing family in the world that supports me in everything I do and they were all there, cheering me on and hoping for the best on Sunday.

“I wish things had went different. I wish I had made better decisions early on to help my guy Pat out and help my team find that momentum and that confidence.

“But you know, I just have to tip my hat to the Eagles.”

Kelce not intersted in Super Bowl record

Jason tried to cheer Kelce up by reminding him his four catches meant he now has the most receptions in Super Bowl history with 35 – two more than Jerry Rice.

But Kelce replied: “That’s the last thing that I care about right now.”

Kelce’s future remains uncertain and he will now spend the offseason deciding whether to carry on playing or call it quits after an illustrious career.
