Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Watford: Match preview
Will Wolverhampton Wanderers’ impressive form continue?
Last time out, a week ago, Wolves held European Champions Chelsea to a goalless draw at Molineux.
The hosts actually felt aggrieved not to win the game but Daniel Podence’s tap-in was rightly ruled out for offside, even if the flag was extremely late in being raised.
Nevertheless, that result ensured Bruno Lage’s side are eighth in the table on Christmas Day.
For a side, who changed manager this summer, to be in the ‘best of the rest apart from West Ham position’ is impressive.
Admittedly, that title needs some work.
Wolves come into this Boxing Day game having only lost three of their last 13 outings, only suffering defeat against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Man City.
1-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-1, 0-1, 1-0 and 0-0.
Not that isn’t some hidden message in binary code, it is Wolves’ last seven results with their score listed first.
In only four of Wolves’ 18 Premier League fixtures have both teams scored, with this last happening way back on 1 November against Everton.
So, to summarise, don’t expect a flurry of goals in this fixture.
Back in September, Lage actually enjoyed his first victory as Wolves manager down at Vicarage Road.
A comical own goal by Francisco Sierralta and then a close-range finish by Hwang Hee-chan saw the visitors win 2-0 in Hertfordshire.
This means Wolverhampton Wanderers can complete a league double over Watford for the first time in top division history.
Will the home fans in attendance enjoy some festive cheer in the shape of a home win?
Will Watford win away?
As for Watford, their results under Claudio Ranieri have been mixed to say the least.
This’ll actually be the Hornets first match for 16 days after their last two fixtures, against Burnley and Crystal Palace, were postponed.
How the Covid-19 outbreak has affected Watford’s preparations and their squad members individually remains to be seen.
What is known is that they come into this clash following four successive Premier League defeats.
In their last outing, they actually took the lead at the Brentford Community Stadium thanks to Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis’ header.
But, Brentford equalised five minutes from time before a kamikaze tackle by William Troost-Ekong gifted the hosts a stoppage time penalty.
The spot-kick was subsequently dispatched, in the 96th minute no less, as Watford left West London with nothing.
This means, since Ranieri’s arrival, they’ve taken just six points from nine games, losing seven of those fixtures.
Their two wins have been extremely memorable, 5-2 at Everton and 4-1 against Manchester United, but sadly extra points aren’t awarded for artistic impression.
Overall, Watford come into this fixture just one place and two points above the relegation zone.
The omens also don’t suggest and away win is on the cards.
This’ll be Ranieri’s eighth Boxing Day fixture and he’s failed to win the previous seven, losing four.
No manager in Premier League history has taken charge of more matches on 26 December without ever enjoying a victory.
Will Watford leave the Black Country with three vital points?
Wolverhampton Wanderers team news vs Watford
Bruno Lage’s XI is largely settled right now, although he does have some persisting injuries to contend with.
José Sá has played every minute in the Premier League since joining from Olympiacos, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding just 14 times.
At the back will be the settled trio of captain Conor Coady with Romain Saïss and Max Kilman either side.
However, this will be disrupted when Saïss departs for the Africa Cup of Nations; Morocco’s first game is against Ghana on 10 January
This could be a problem as Willy Boly, who’d be at the tournament with Côte d’Ivoire anyway, and Yerson Mosquera are injured.
Likewise, at left-wing-back, Rayan Aït-Nouri has joined Jonny in the treatment room.
So, Marçal will continue in that position but, on the other side, Nélson Semedo could return in place of Ki-Jana Hoever.
A week ago, Leander Dendoncker came in against Chelsea to beef up the midfield.
However, for this, on paper, easier fixture, a double-pivot of Rúben Neves and João Moutinho might be trusted.
This’ll allow Lage to bring in an extra attacking player, although some of his options have been misfiring.
Francisco Trincão and Adama Traoré jointly both lead the way for an unwanted statistics in the Premier League: most shots without scoring (21).
Despite this, the former will come into the side, partially due to Hwang Hee-chan’s injury sustained away to Brighton.
So, Trincão will complete an attacking line-up also featuring Daniel Podence and Raúl Jiménez, the latter hoping to add to his three goals this season.
Will Wolves enjoy a win?
Watford team news vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
As for Watford, their XI is almost impossible to predict, due to the understandable anonymity around their Covid-19 outbreak.
So, all team news is subject to players isolating or suffering longer-term affects of having the virus.
In goal, they’ll certainly be hoping that Daniel Bachmann is available with first choice keeper Ben Foster currently injured.
At left-back, with Adam Masina injured and Danny Rose struggling for form, Jeremy Ngakia could switch over with Kiko Femenía on the right.
In the middle, after giving away a stoppage time penalty, William Troost-Ekong could lose his place to Christian Kabasele.
Midfield has recently been comprised of captain Moussa Sissoko, Tom Cleverley and one other.
Ozan Tufan, on loan from Fenerbahçe, could complete the trio with Juraj Kucka joining Imran Louza and Ken Sema on the bench.
Further forward, Ismaïla Sarr hasn’t featured since 20 November due to a knee ligament injury.
Without him, Josh King and Cucho Hernández will continue out-wide, supporting Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis.
Since arriving from Brugge, Dennis has scored seven goals and recoded five assists, meaning he’s been involved in 57% of their goals this season.
He’s certainly going to leave a huge void during AFCON; Nigeria’s first match is against Egypt on 11 January.
